The Belgian waffles– A Brief Guide for Travellers & Holidaymakers

The Belgian Waffles have become a global phenomenon. Almost every kid and adult knows about Waffles. From America to Russia, everyone knows about the delicious waffle.

And as the name implies, the waffle comes from the small yet enchanting country of Belgium. It is surprising to see how this amazing dish from small origins has managed to capture the attention of the entire world.

So, want to know all about this amazing delight? Then read on to find out!

There are two types of Belgian Waffles to start with

1.    The Brussels Waffle

The Brussels waffle is characterized by a square/rectangular waffle. This is the most common waffle that you will come across in most places. It is usually served with different kinds of toppings that actually makes it a good alternative to breakfast.

2.    The Liege Waffle

This is the oval-shaped waffle that you will not see everywhere.

It is made from brioche dough which features caramelized sugar chunks inside. This makes the waffle gooier rich from the inside. So, you might not need other toppings to go with the Liege Waffle.

Origins of the Belgian Waffle

Like many other popular dishes of the old, the Belgian Waffle doesn’t have an exact date of origin or a particular inventor.

However, according to existing records, the Brussels Waffle or the Belgium Waffle can be traced back to 1874. But, we can expect it to be much older than that.

That’s because the term or the word “Waffle” was first found in the year 1604. And another reference can be found out in the Dutch caricature that talks about Belgian Independence. You can find the picture of Willem I’s throne which also features a waffle next to two types of Belgium Beer.

Feel like getting a Belgium Visa so that you can visit this iconic place with your loved ones? Before you do that, read our brief guide to know the best places to visit and things to do in Grand Place.

A Brief History of the Grand Place

Originally, the Brussels Grand Place was a marketplace where numerous traders and citizens used to trade goods.

Did you know? The streets surrounding the square are named after food. It’s due to the marketplace that the Place was in the olden times. Some of the streets are:

·        Rue du Marché aux Herbes - Herbs

·        Rue au Beurre - Butter

·        Rue du Marché aux Fromages – Cheese

But, as time passed, the market stands had to go for the city expansion which meant grand buildings took the prime places and these are what surround the Grand Place today.

During the bombardment of Brussels, most of the buildings were damaged and it was after 1695 that most of the buildings were restored including the Grand Place.
